On April 30, 2008, at 03:58 a.m., Port Orchard officers and South Kitsap Fire Rescue were dispatched to a residential house fire at 1147 Sidney Ave, Port Orchard WA. Officers arrived and found the residence fully engulfed in flames. After the blaze was extinguished, firefighters found a human body on a bedroom floor. The victim was identified as the homeowner, Linda L Malcom (1/21/61). Further investigation determined that Ms. Malcom had been stabbed multiple times and died prior to the residence being set on fire. Numerous leads were developed and several persons of interest were brought to the attention of investigators.  However, the case remains unsolved.

POPD Case #3026A/1A

On August 15, 1961, at 08:15 a.m., Port Orchard Police Officers and the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a reported homicide at the Hi Joy Bowling Alley in Port Orchard WA. Officers located a deceased male lying on the floor near the register counter. The male was identified as James E Smith, who was employed as a janitor at the bowling alley. Mr. Smith was last seen entering the bowling alley at approximately 02:00 a.m. and was found by staff at 08:00 a.m. Mr. Smith had been assaulted then struck in the head multiple times with what appeared to be a hatchet. The business appeared to have been broken into and possibly Mr. Smith came across the suspect. Other local businesses had also been broken into that night. This case remains unsolved.
